Article Overview:

In this edition of The Good Life Abroad Spotlight Series, founder Andrew Motiwalla is joined by Community Manager Andrea Ledda and team member Mike Vayda to dive into one of the most overlooked gems in the Mediterranean: Cagliari, Sardinia.

From vibrant neighborhoods to stunning coastal views and locally-driven experiences, this conversation highlights what makes Sardinia’s capital city a refreshing alternative to Europe’s more tourist-heavy destinations.

Whether you're craving beach mornings, local wine tastings, or a slower pace of life, the Cagliari experience might just be the most surprising discovery in The Good Life Abroad lineup.

Why Cagliari Feels Different

Both Andrew and Mike describe arriving in Cagliari as unexpectedly magical. After traveling through Italy’s more famous cities, they found Cagliari’s energy to be laid-back, welcoming, and strikingly beautiful. As Mike put it, this is “Italy in all the good ways, but with its own personality.”

The charm of Cagliari lies in its walkable streets, warm Mediterranean sun, and the kind of everyday rhythms that make it feel more like home than a vacation spot. There’s also a strong local identity—while undeniably Italian, Sardinia maintains its own language, cuisine, and traditions that make it feel distinct.

The Neighborhoods: Marina & Villanova

Participants stay in modern, loft-style apartments in Cagliari’s historic city center, specifically in the Marina and Villanova neighborhoods. These areas are colorful, lively, and full of character—just steps away from the waterfront, cafes, markets, and local shops.

Though compact in size, the apartments offer everything needed for a comfortable stay: air conditioning, Wi-Fi, washing machines, smart TVs, and small kitchenettes ideal for breakfast or reheating local takeout.

Importantly, the location is central but quiet, allowing guests to fully enjoy Cagliari’s charm without sacrificing rest or convenience.

Life in a Blue Zone

Sardinia is one of the world’s five recognized Blue Zones—regions known for longevity, wellness, and strong community ties. That’s not just a health label—it’s a lived experience here.

Andrea, who returned to Sardinia after a decade in California, speaks to the deep sense of balance the island offers: beautiful weather, meaningful social connections, and a lifestyle that prioritizes quality over speed. From outdoor walks to long lunches, it’s easy to fall into the rhythm.

Curated Activities & Daily Adventures

Guests enjoy a familiar weekly flow of events—Tuesday lunch clubs, Wednesday cultural excursions, and Thursday happy hours—as well as several immersive cultural experiences, including:

  • A hike to Sella del Diavolo with Andrea’s homemade aperitivo
  • A visit to a local organic winery
  • A hands-on pasta-making class with a Sardinian chef
  • A pottery workshop with a local artist

Outside of the group programming, guests can walk to Poetto Beach, rent bikes, go kayaking, or take weekend bus trips to explore nearby towns and coastal villages.

The Ideal Traveler for Sardinia

Cagliari is perfect for those seeking a lifestyle destination rather than a checklist of attractions. While it offers rich history and architecture, its real value lies in its outdoor lifestyle, slow pace, and authenticity.

Whether you’re reading by the sea, writing in a local café, or simply enjoying a cappuccino while people-watching, this city rewards those who slow down.
