How to Live Abroad in Retirement Without Becoming an Expat – As Featured on the Sunshine Travelers Podcast

Published: February 10th, 2026

What does it look like to stop rushing through destinations and actually live in them? That's exactly the question Scott and Melissa Barronton set out to answer in Episode 159 of the Sunshine Travelers Podcast, and they found the perfect guest to help them explore it.

With Scott's corporate retirement on the horizon, the couple had been reflecting on what the next chapter of travel would look like for them — less itinerary-packing, more depth. That's what brought them to Andrew Motiwalla, founder and CEO of The Good Life Abroad.

About the Podcast

The Sunshine Travelers Podcast, hosted by Scott and Melissa Barronton, is a travel show for people who love exploring the world and want firsthand tips, inspiration, and stories from real destinations. Their audience skews toward the 50+ traveler, making this conversation a natural fit.

What They Discussed

Andrew shared the story behind The Good Life Abroad — a program designed for adults 55 and older who want to live in Europe for one to three months, not as tourists, but as temporary locals. With over 25 cities across Europe, vetted apartments, a local community manager, built-in activities, and medical insurance, the program removes the biggest barriers people face when considering a longer stay abroad.

The conversation covered a lot of ground, including:

  • Why community changes everything. Andrew explained that the program's built-in social structure — weekly Tuesday lunch clubs, cultural Wednesday activities, and Thursday happy hours — helps travelers find what he calls their "tribe." Retirees often find their sense of identity shifting after leaving their careers and communities, and The Good Life Abroad helps fill that gap with genuine connection.

  • The real adjustments of living in a European city. Andrew didn't sugarcoat the experience. Garbage trucks at midnight, dinner at 10 p.m., smaller kitchens, no ADA accessibility — these are real aspects of European life that the program prepares participants for, including vetting every apartment for walk-in showers, elevators, and double-pane windows.

  • Traveling with intention. One of the most memorable stories Andrew shared was about a traveler named Tom, who took a Renaissance art history class at his local community college before joining a Florence program. That preparation transformed his experience — every museum and chapel visit became deeply meaningful rather than a box to check.

  • Solo travelers are welcome. Andrew noted that about 30% of participants travel solo, and the program is specifically designed so no one ever feels alone.

  • Visitors are welcome too. Participants can have friends or family come stay during their time abroad — they just need to book an appropriately sized apartment in advance.

Who Is Andrew Motiwalla?

Andrew has spent 30 years in the travel industry and traces his passion for living abroad to his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Central America. He built The Good Life Abroad partly from personal desire — he wanted a turnkey way to spend a few months a year in Europe without giving up his San Diego home base — and partly from watching his own parents' lives transform after moving into a 55-plus community. The combination of slow travel, comfort, and community became the foundation of everything he's built.

When asked his favorite destination, Andrew chose Peru — his mother's home country — for its three distinct regions, deep history, and world-class cuisine. Next on his personal bucket list: Morocco, where he plans to spend time with the Berber tribes in the Atlas Mountains, cooking and going deep into the culture.

Why It Matters

Scott and Melissa wrapped up the episode with a message that resonated well beyond the logistics of long-stay travel: retirement isn't about the world getting smaller. It's an opportunity for it to get bigger — with more intention, more connection, and more of the experiences that stay with you long after you come home.

If someone in your life has ever said they wish they'd traveled more when they were younger, this episode is worth sharing with them. It might just change how they think about what's still possible.
