In this edition of The Good Life Abroad Spotlight Series, founder Andrew Motiwalla is joined by Rome Community Manager Roberta Di Domenico to explore what it’s really like to spend a month living in Rome—not just visiting.
Rome might be one of the most visited cities in the world, but many travelers never truly get to know it. This session dives into what makes the city feel livable, local, and endlessly fascinating once you move beyond the postcard landmarks.
Together, Andrew and Roberta walk through the structure of the Rome program, the neighborhood where participants stay, the curated activities that foster connection, and the kinds of meaningful experiences that can only happen when you take your time in a place like this.
Why Rome, and Why Now
Rome is often misunderstood—a must-see city that many people think they’ve already “done.” But in this conversation, Roberta shares why she’s stayed for more than 30 years and why Rome’s layers of history, beauty, and neighborhood culture continue to unfold for those who stay longer.
She emphasizes that Rome isn’t just a museum of ancient ruins—it’s a living city, full of hidden piazzas, local trattorias, and vibrant daily life. Her approach to community management is rooted in helping guests see the soul of the city, not just the surface.
Where You’ll Stay – The Salustiano Neighborhood
Participants live in modern, comfortable apartments in Salustiano, a centrally located residential neighborhood that’s just a 15–20 minute walk from iconic sites like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum. The building is fully equipped with elevators, smart TVs, washing machines, and quiet, air-conditioned units.
Importantly, it's outside the dense tourist core—close enough to explore, but far enough to live like a local. Supermarkets, coffee bars, pharmacies, rooftop terraces, and even a theater are all just steps away. Roberta calls it one of the most “real Roman” neighborhoods in the city.
Living Like a Local – Orientation & Cultural Support
From the moment participants arrive, Roberta is there to help everyone settle in. She leads a city orientation, shows guests how to navigate Rome’s metro and bus system, and organizes a weekly rhythm of cultural programming.
Expect to:
- Learn the basics of conversational Italian
- Take part in Tuesday lunch clubs in lesser-known neighborhoods
- Enjoy happy hours, jazz nights, and even day trips to a locals-only beach
- Attend a Roman cooking class and explore different layers of the city (above and underground)
Roberta blends practical guidance with her deep love for the city—introducing guests not just to places, but to perspectives.
The Community Vibe
This program is built for independent travelers, but you’re never alone. Each cohort begins with a pre-departure Zoom call, and members stay connected via WhatsApp during the experience. Roberta helps guide affinity groups (think foodies, solo travelers, or walking buddies), and guests often form deep connections that continue long after the trip ends.
Andrew emphasizes that Rome is perfect for those who want more than a checklist vacation. It’s for people who want to experience life at a Roman pace, savor simple meals, stumble upon a new jazz club, or spend an entire afternoon people-watching in a piazza.
