Spotlight on Prague: One of Europe's Most Beautiful Cities—And What It's Like to Live There for a Month
There's really only one Prague in the world.
That's not marketing language—it's something our Prague Community Manager, Aneta, says with genuine conviction after 15 years of calling the Czech capital home. And after sitting down with her for a deep-dive webinar, it's easy to see why.
Andrew Motiwalla, founder of The Good Life Abroad, joined Aneta to pull back the curtain on what a month-long program in Prague actually looks like—from the neighborhood you'll call home, to the activities, the community, and the hidden gems that no guidebook will tell you about.
Here's what they covered.
Prague: A Lucky City Frozen in Time (But Very Much Alive)
Prague is one of the best-preserved cities in all of Europe. Unlike many of its neighbors, it largely escaped the destruction of World War II—a stroke of luck that left its Gothic spires, Baroque facades, and medieval cobblestone lanes almost entirely intact. Walking through the Old Town, you genuinely feel transported back to the 14th century. And yet the city is thoroughly modern—full of life, culture, excellent food, and an energy that surprises first-time visitors.
"Even after living here so many years, I still discover new hidden gems," Aneta told us during the webinar. "If you get lost in Prague, you're a lucky person."
The city is also remarkably compact and walkable. Landmarks like the Old Town Square, the Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle are all within easy reach of each other—and of your apartment.
Where You'll Live: New Town, Right in the Heart of It All
The entire Good Life Abroad group in Prague lives in the same building—a modern, air-conditioned apartment complex in the New Town (Nové Město) neighborhood, just steps from Wenceslas Square. Don't let the name fool you: "New Town" was founded in the 14th century. It's simply "new" by Prague standards.
The location puts you within walking distance of the Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter, the Charles Bridge, and the river—everything you'd want to explore without needing to hop on public transit. Apartments include a full kitchen setup, bedroom, bathroom, living area, and access to a shared laundry room in the building. A daytime receptionist is on-site, and a small park sits right across the street.
These are practical, comfortable apartments—not luxury suites, but everything you need to live like a local for a month.
The Weekly Rhythm: Structure Without Rigidity
One of the things people love most about The Good Life Abroad is the balance between community connection and personal freedom. Each week follows a gentle rhythm:
Orientation Day — The morning after you arrive, Aneta leads a neighborhood orientation to help you get your bearings and start living like a local. That evening: a welcome party.
Tuesday Lunch Club — The signature weekly gathering of the entire community. Each week, Aneta takes the group to a different restaurant—sometimes in a neighborhood you'd never wander into on your own, sometimes on a day trip outside the city. The goal isn't just lunch. It's discovering the culture through food, exploring new corners of the city, and reconnecting as a community after days of independent exploring.
Wednesday Cultural Activities — A rotating slate of curated experiences (more on those below).
Thursday Happy Hour — A weekly social gathering for the 55+ crowd.
Friday through Monday — Yours. Completely free to explore, travel, or simply sit at a café and watch the world go by.
Activities That Go Beyond the Guidebook
Aneta brings real creativity and personal knowledge to the activity programming. The most recent group's highlights included:
Czech cooking class — Guests learned to make potato soup and strudel from scratch. It was, by all accounts, a group favorite.
Glass blowing workshop — Glass-making is a proud Czech tradition, and participants got to create their own piece to bring home.
Architecture walking tour — After learning the group had a particular interest in architecture, Aneta arranged a custom tour. This is how the program works: it adapts to you.
Prague Castle tour — One of the most iconic sites in Central Europe, explored with local context rather than a tourist script.
Beer and wine tasting — The Czech Republic holds the world's highest per-capita beer consumption. The wines are less well-known but equally worth discovering.
Šlivovitz Museum visit — A virtual reality experience inside the museum of Czech plum brandy. Guests actually became a plum. Yes, really.
Day trip to Karlštejn — The historic castle and surrounding nature area, visited as a group outing. One of the highlights of the Tuesday Lunch Club calendar.
The Community Manager: Your Local Friend on the Ground
Aneta has lived in Prague for 15 years. Before that, she traveled extensively—living in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Greece—and spent five years as a professional tour guide across the Czech Republic. She speaks multiple languages, knows the city intimately, and has an obvious passion for sharing it with others.
But her role goes beyond logistics. From day one, Aneta takes time to get to know each person in the group individually—what they're hoping to get out of the month, what they love, what they're curious about. From there, she becomes something closer to a local friend: suggesting jazz venues, helping book train tickets to Budapest, pointing you toward a neighborhood restaurant that won't be on any "Top 10" list.
She's available via WhatsApp Monday through Friday, 9 to 5. And when the month ends? "They just felt like family," she said of the group that had just departed. "I really miss them."
Community and Connection
Every Good Life Abroad program is cohort-based—a group of roughly 10 to 20 travelers (about 90% from North America) who arrive on the same start date and spend the month together. About a third are solo travelers; the rest are couples. The mix works remarkably well.
Before you even arrive, there's a pre-departure Zoom call so you can put faces to names. Once on the ground, the group uses a WhatsApp community with shared channels for announcements, member-to-member connections, and self-organized sub-groups—runners, book lovers, museum-goers, or anyone who wants to find a dinner companion for Tuesday night.
Solo traveler sessions are also available in Prague—dedicated cohorts made up entirely of solo travelers, offering an even tighter sense of community from the start.
Beyond Prague: Day Trips and Weekend Escapes
One of the most underappreciated things about Prague is its location. It sits at the heart of Europe, making it an ideal base for weekend travel. Popular destinations from recent programs include:
Český Krumlov — A fairy-tale medieval town with a stunning castle, often called a smaller, quieter version of Prague. A top pick for day trips and overnight stays.
Karlštejn — A Gothic castle surrounded by beautiful nature, included as a group outing.
Kutná Hora — Connected to the Czech Republic's silver mining history, a fascinating half-day trip.
Karlovy Vary — A gorgeous spa town ideal for a relaxing weekend retreat.
Dresden — Two hours by train, beautifully rebuilt after wartime destruction.
Vienna — Four hours by train. One of the great European capitals, easily reachable for a long weekend.
A Few Practical Notes
Language: English is widely spoken in Prague, especially in the city center. Aneta also teaches basic Czech phrases during orientation—including, most importantly, how to say "cheers."
Getting around: Prague is very walkable. Public transit is easy to use. Most of the program's activities can be reached on foot.
Cobblestones: Bring comfortable walking shoes. Prague is beautiful and historic and very much paved in cobblestone.
This is not a tour: There's no bus. You navigate with Google Maps links from Aneta via WhatsApp. A smartphone is essential.
Guests: Friends and family are welcome to visit—they just don't participate in scheduled community activities.
