Spotlight on Pride Vacations
Pride in Europe: A Month in Barcelona or Amsterdam with Pride Vacations & The Good Life Abroad
What if you could experience Pride in Europe—not as a tourist passing through for a weekend, but as someone who actually lives there for a month?
That's the vision behind a new partnership between The Good Life Abroad and Pride Vacations—and in a recent webinar, TGLA founder Andrew Motiwalla sat down with John Layton, founder and CEO of Pride Vacations, to share exactly how it works.
The result is something genuinely new: a month-long immersive living experience in Barcelona or Amsterdam, timed around each city's Pride celebrations, and designed specifically for LGBTQ+ travelers and allies.

How the Partnership Came Together
John has spent over 40 years in the travel industry—as a tour guide, cruise director, and flight attendant—and had long envisioned creating a travel experience rooted in something he kept hearing from fellow travelers: what matters most isn't just the destination, it's the people.
When he set out to build that experience for the LGBTQ+ community, he came across The Good Life Abroad—a company already doing exactly what he envisioned. Rather than reinvent the wheel, he reached out to Andrew, and a partnership was born.
"The Good Life Abroad was already doing what I was envisioning doing for the LGBT community," John said during the webinar. "What if I partnered with an established company that already had all the infrastructure in place?"
Why Barcelona and Amsterdam
The two launch cities for 2027 were chosen deliberately. Both have deep histories of LGBTQ+ inclusivity—it's not a subculture in these cities, it's part of their identity. And both have strong existing infrastructure through The Good Life Abroad, including vetted apartments and engaged local Community Managers who are excited to welcome Pride Vacations travelers.
Barcelona (June 20–July 20, 2027) hosts one of Europe's most expansive Pride celebrations—not just a single parade, but neighborhood events happening all across the city. Participants stay in apartments near the Arc de Triomf, with a rooftop pool that looks directly out over the park where much of the festivities take place. It's a central, walkable neighborhood where locals actually live—grocery stores, cafés, and everything you need for a month of real daily life.
Amsterdam (July 20–August 19, 2027) offers something you won't find anywhere else: a Pride parade on the canals. Participants stay in the Plantage neighborhood, right in the heart of the canal district. Amsterdam's Pride events also extend to neighboring cities, all easily accessible by public transportation.
Crucially, the dates are back-to-back—making it possible to do both, for a full two months in Europe.
More Than a Pride Event
One of the most important points raised in the webinar: this isn't a Pride event wrapped in a travel package. It's a month-long living experience that happens to take place during Pride.
The programming follows The Good Life Abroad's signature model—a weekly rhythm of optional, included activities designed to build community and connect travelers to local culture. Weekly Tuesday lunches, Wednesday cultural activities, and Thursday happy hours form the backbone of the calendar. For Pride Vacations programs, those activities get a thoughtful LGBTQ+ lens: dinners at gay-owned restaurants, happy hours at the neighborhood's most celebrated gay bars, walking tours that include the history of LGBTQ+ rights in each city, and more.
But the other 28+ days? They're yours. You can cook paella in a Barcelona cooking class, take a day trip to a neighboring town, spend an afternoon wandering a museum, or simply sit at a canal-side café and watch the city move. The community takes on a life of its own—WhatsApp groups form around shared interests, and travelers often find themselves doing far more than they originally planned, simply because someone in the group mentioned something worth doing.
"Does that mean it's all Pride, all gay, every day?" Andrew said in the webinar. "Absolutely not. You can go out and do everything—because that's what makes these cities so magical."
The Community Manager Difference
As with all Good Life Abroad programs, local Community Managers are central to the experience. They're not tour guides. They meet individually with each traveler at the start of the program to understand what that person wants out of their month—and then help make it happen.
They organize all the scheduled activities, provide city orientations, help with logistics like public transit and day trip planning, and are available by WhatsApp Monday through Friday. They also have personal ties to the LGBTQ+ community in their respective cities and are genuinely excited to welcome Pride Vacations travelers.
As John put it: "By the time you met your Community Manager on the first day, you felt like you already had a friend. And on the last day, you hugged your friend goodbye."
Is This Program Right for You?
This program is for independent travelers who also value community. It's not a tour—there's no bus, no rigid itinerary, no hand-holding. You'll need to be comfortable using a smartphone, navigating public transportation, and doing a fair amount of walking. Apartments are modern and fully equipped, but they reflect European living—thoughtfully sized, with everything you need.
It's worth noting: this program is open to LGBTQ+ travelers and allies. As John said, "Pride is all about inclusion, not exclusion."
Solo travelers are especially welcome. About 30% of Good Life Abroad travelers come on their own—and the community structure means no one is left to figure things out alone.
What's Included
The program price covers the apartment, all scheduled community activities, high-speed Wi-Fi, weekly housekeeping, the local Community Manager, and travel medical insurance.
